The Step Of Your Night Routine Nobody Told You About. It Lasts Eight Hours, And You Probably Did It Last Sunday.

If you change your pillowcase once a week, your face spends 56 hours on the same piece of fabric between washes. Here is why that matters, and the thirty-second fix.

You know your night routine by heart.

Hair up. Cleanser, sixty seconds, because someone on the internet said sixty seconds and it stuck. Pat dry with the good towel. The one nobody else in the house is allowed to touch.

Then the serum that cost more than your last pair of jeans. Three drops, pressed in, never rubbed. Moisturiser. On some nights, the retinol you were nervous about for a year before you finally tried it.

Twenty minutes. Sometimes more.

You take your skin seriously.

And then you switch off the light, turn onto your side, and put your face down on a pillowcase you last changed... when, exactly?

Go on. Count back.

If the honest answer is "Sunday", you are doing better than most of us. If it is "the Sunday before that", you are in very good company.

Here is what nobody tells you about your pillowcase:

It is the longest step in your routine.

Your cleanser gets a minute. Your serum gets a few seconds. Your pillowcase gets eight hours, every night, in the same spot.

Change it once a week and that is 56 hours with your face on one piece of fabric between washes. More than two full days.

A clean-looking white pillow on a bed at night

And it is not sitting there doing nothing.

Last night's moisturiser did not all stay on your face. It never does. A little of it ends up in the weave by morning. Then a little more the next night, on top.

Add the natural oil your skin makes whether you want it to or not. A warm night's sweat. The trace of mascara you did not quite get off on Thursday.

By night six you cleanse for your sixty seconds, press in your three drops, do everything right...

...and then lie down on five nights of everything.

The thing that makes it so easy to ignore:

It never looks dirty.

No mark. No smell. No signal of any kind. A pillowcase on night six looks exactly like a pillowcase on night one.

The only clue turns up years later, when you lay an old white one next to a new one and notice it is no longer the same colour. That is not one bad night. It is what a few hundred washes left behind.

A new white pillowcase next to an older, slightly yellowed one

It is not only skincare, either.

Leave-in conditioner. The oil on your ends. This morning's dry shampoo. Your hair spends the night on the same fabric as your cheek, and it does not keep its products to itself.

A bedside table with hair oil, a hairbrush and hair ties

"Fine. I will just change it more often."

You have probably tried. Most of us have. It tends to go like this:

✓Week 1You remember on Wednesday and feel quietly virtuous.
~Week 2The spare is still damp, so you turn the pillow over instead.
✗Week 3You do not remember at all.

It is not laziness. You simply run out of pillowcases. Most of us own just enough to dress the bed, and they all live in the same wash.

And if you bought one nice silk pillowcase, it gets worse.

Silk likes a gentle wash and time to dry. You own exactly one. So every week it is the same quiet choice: wash it and spend a night back on cotton, or leave it on for one more night.

You already know which one wins. Day nine. Day twelve. Day sixteen.

The nicest pillowcase in the house becomes the one that is changed least.

The fix is almost embarrassingly simple

Not a new product for your face. Not another step in the routine. Not more discipline.

Just enough pillowcases, and one rule.

Introducing Third Night

Three Third Night silk pillowcases on a bed

Third Night is a set of three silk pillowcases, made to be used in rotation. The name is the instruction.

Sleep on the first for two nights. On the third night, swap to a fresh one. Two more nights, swap again.

By the time you have used all three, it is wash day anyway. One gentle wash, all three together, and the week starts again.

No extra laundry. Nothing to remember. Never more than two nights on the same pillowcase.

Here is what your week looks like:

2Night 3Swap. Thirty seconds

You have two choices tonight:

Choice 1Change it when you remember
Choice 2Three, on rotation

Choice 1: close this page and carry on. Change it when you remember. It is what most of us do, and nothing terrible will happen.

But you will know, now, what you are lying on by Thursday.

Choice 2: three pillowcases and one rule. A clean place to put your face, every third night, without ever having to think about it.

What we will not tell you

We will not tell you a pillowcase will transform your skin. It is a pillowcase. It will not replace your cleanser or do the job of your retinol, and if your skin is giving you real trouble, a pharmacist or your GP is the right person to ask.

What we will say is simpler. You have built a careful routine, one considered step after another. It makes sense for the last step, the one that lasts eight hours, to be as clean as all the others.

Questions you might have

Why three and not two?

With two, one is on the pillow and the other is in the wash or drying. Miss a single wash and you are back to sleeping on the same one for a fortnight. Three keeps a clean one in hand all week with just one wash.

Can I choose three different colours?

Yes. Pick any three of the five. Different colours make the rotation easier, because the bed itself shows you which night you are on.

Can I just buy one?

You can, at £39. It is there if you want to add to a set. On its own, though, one pillowcase takes you straight back to the problem this page describes.

What if they are not for me?

You have 14 days to return them. The full details are in our returns policy.

Sleep well,
The Third Night team

P.S. You could do all of this with three spare pillowcases you already own. If you will keep it up, start tonight. It costs nothing.

If you would rather have a set made for the job, in colours that show you which night you are on, that is what Third Night is for. See the set of three.
